New Orleans Adds High-Visibility Bike Lanes and Crosswalks to N. Rampart St.

Traffic deaths have long been a safety concern in New Orleans. One particular area that has caught the attention of safety advocates and city officials is North Rampart Street, a busy street in the northern tier of the city's French Quarter. Bicyclists and pedestrians are particularly at risk due to speeding, reckless driving, impaired driving, distracted driving, and failure to yield.

The French Quarter Management District (FQMD) has wrapped up a significant project to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety along North Rampart Street. The $200,000 initiative is in cooperation with the City of New Orleans. It reached completion in August 2024, which marked an important milestone for the North Rampart Pedestrian Safety Improvements program.

What safety improvements have been made to N. Rampart Street?

For the thousands of locals and tourists who travel North Rampart Street, the FQMD changes are designed to make daily commutes safer and more convenient. They include the following:

Painted bike lanes

One of the most visible changes on North Rampart Street is the addition of green-painted bike lanes. Stretching from Toulouse to St. Philip, these lanes are not just for aesthetics—they serve as clear markers for bicyclists and drivers alike, helping to prevent accidents and confusion. The vibrant color sends a clear message: this lane is for two wheels, not four.

To reinforce these lanes, the project also installed 60 high-visibility flex posts along the bike path. These durable posts create a physical and visual buffer between cars and cyclists, offering an extra layer of protection. With these new posts, cyclists will feel less like they're pedaling in the danger zone and more like they're on a protected route through the heart of the city.

Flashing lights for safer nights

Pedestrians crossing the busy intersections of North Rampart now have extra help, too. The FQMD installed pedestrian-activated flashing beacon lights at two key intersections: St. Philip Street and St. Ann Street. These flashing lights alert drivers that someone is crossing. They add a safety measure that can't be ignored, especially in this high-traffic area near Armstrong Park. With these new lights, pedestrians won't have to risk life and limb crossing the street. These upgrades comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). They ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, can navigate the area safely.

Brick red corner zones for visibility

In addition to bike lanes and flashing lights, the FQMD painted five intersection corner zones brick red. This choice isn't just about looks—it's a practical move to increase visibility. Red is a color that drivers can spot quickly, and it makes it clear that these are pedestrian-heavy areas where extra caution is needed.

These red-painted corners work hand in hand with the green bike lanes and flex posts. They create a visual system that makes it easier for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians—to share the road safely. The bright colors don't just stand out; they serve as signals that help prevent collisions before they happen.

Benefits for daily commuters and visitors

The new improvements make the street safer for everyone who uses it. These changes are especially beneficial in the French Quarter, which is known for its narrow streets and high foot traffic. Armstrong Park, located just off North Rampart, draws both locals and tourists. This creates a mix of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers sharing the same space. With these new safety features, the balance tips in favor of pedestrians and cyclists, giving them a safer, more comfortable experience.

The project also benefits daily commuters who travel through North Rampart on their way to work. The clearer bike lanes and enhanced intersections help reduce traffic accidents and make commuting by bike or foot a safer and more attractive option.
