Forbes Study Names Louisiana the 9th Most Dangerous State for Drivers

A New Orleans car accident lawyer explains why the state ranks so poorly.

Car accidents happen every day across the nation, but there are some states where serious and fatal crashes happen more often than others. Recently, the Forbes Advisor team performed an analysis to find out which states are the safest and most dangerous for drivers. Researchers used five key metrics to assign a “Most Dangerous State for Drivers Score,” and Louisiana came in as the 9th most dangerous:

  1. Montana: 45.85
  2. South Carolina: 41.8
  3. Wyoming: 39.1
  4. Missouri: 39.0
  5. New Mexico: 38.15
  6. South Dakota: 37.2
  7. Texas: 35.35
  8. Arkansas: 34.6
  9. Louisiana: 32.3
  10. North Carolina: 31.3

The study looked at statistics related to fatal crashes, including the number of people killed in car accidents per capita, the percent change in roadway fatalities from 2019-2020, and the percentage of accidents caused by negligent driving.

Louisiana car accident statistics

Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Forbes Advisor study revealed that 35% of Louisiana’s car accident fatalities involved impaired driving, while 23% were caused by speeding.

Louisiana also had a 14% increase in the number of people killed in car accidents from 2019 to 2020. According to the study, the state had a fatal car accident per capita rate of 0.016 and a roadway fatalities per capita rate of 0.018, which were both the 8th highest in the nation.

Negligent drivers cause too many crashes.

Unfortunately, these findings highlight the need for increased safety measures and accountability for negligent drivers. Nationwide, car accidents happen about once every 5 seconds, and someone is injured in a crash once every 10 seconds. Furthermore, car crashes are now the leading cause of death among people below age 54 in the U.S. and are one of the eight leading causes of death globally. Car accidents also result in millions of injuries per year, with 2 million casualties annually worldwide. The bottom line is it only takes one reckless or negligent driver to cause a crash that leaves you or someone you care about injured, in pain, and searching for answers.
